What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal. - Albert Pike

December 29, 2005

Late in 2003 the dream of a Balfour Town Public Library on Salt Cay was realized.  With the encouragement and active support of the Salt Cay District Commissioner, a group of Salt Cay natives and residents came together to affirm the desire for a library accessible to both residents and visitors.  Our Grand Opening on April 14, 2004 was a wonderful event, we hope to post some photographs on this website soon.  A very special thank you too all who helped and all who attended.

Since January 2004, we have raised enough money and materials to paint and renovation the Library, construct bookcases and tables, pay for shipping books and videos, purchase book pockets and book cards and other supplies needed for the Library. Volunteers are providing all of the labor.  In 2004 we were also to create a job for a local island resident as the Assistant Librarian for the Balfour Town Public Library.  Through the generous donations made by local residents, visitors to the island and the Pine Cay Project, we have been able to pay the Assistant Librarian's salary.

With the generous and numerous donations of books, magazines and videos we have realized our goal of providing a Library for residents and visitors of Salt Cay.  The work is not over.  We are in need of funding to continue to provide the salary for our Assistant Librarian and construct more bookshelves for our ever-growing collection of books and videos.

We encourage you to bookmark this page for updates on the progress of the Balfour Town Public Library project on Salt Cay, Turks & Caicos Islands.

Thank you for your help,
